FL-Islandora Guide: XVII. How to Add Newspapers

A guide for FL-Islandora users.

Creating a Newspaper

1.  Logged in, navigate to the collection where you want to add a newspaper. Click on Children. Click on the Add Child button. Click on Repository Item.

2.  Type in the name of the newspaper in the Title. For Model, select Newspaper. Scroll down to add any info such as Date created. Scroll down to Type and select Collection from the drop-down menu. Click the Save button. Congratulations you have now created your first Newspaper!

3.  Now you can add a thumbnail to the newspaper. To add a thumbnail, click on Media in the center of the screen.

4.  Click on the Add Media button.

5.  Click on Image.

6.  For the name you can type in the name of the logo or leave as is. Select your image by clicking on the Browse button under Image. Select Thumbnail Image for the Media Use. Click the Save button. Now when you click into the collection housing the newspaper, you will see the thumbnail next to the name of your newspaper.

7.  Click on Back to site to get back to the newspaper.

8.  Now you can add issues to the newspaper. Click the newspaper that you created and click Children in the middle of the screen. Click Add Child. Click Repository Item.

9.  Fill the information for the issue. Put in the name of the issue under Title. Select Publication Issue from the Model drop-down menu. Scroll down to the Date Issued and put in the date issued in the YYYY-MM-DD format. Fill in any other information as you scroll down. Select Collection under Type drop-down menu. Click on the Save button. Congratulations, you have created your first issue!

10.  Now to add the pages for the issue. Click Children above the issue name.

11.  Click on the Add Child button.

12.  Click on Repository Item.

13.  For the Title you can put Page 1. (For each succeeding Page, you would just change it to increase by one-- Page 2, etc.)  Select Page from the Model drop-down menu. Select Text under the Type drop-down menu. Click in the System and in the Custom Sort Value box choose 1 for the first page and 2 and so forth for each page of the issue. The Custom Sort Value is for the order of the pages.  Click the Save button.

14.  Click on Media. Next click on Add Media.

15.  Click on either File (for TIFFs and JP2s) or Image (for JPGs).

16.  You can keep the prefilled in Name. Click the Browse button and select you file to upload. Choose Original File from Media Use. Click on the Save button. Click back on the newspaper issue and repeat steps 10-14 to add the rest of the pages in your issue. You have now added your first newspaper issue!

17.  Click on Back to site to bring you to the newspaper issue.

18.  Click on the issue in the bread crumbs above the Page 1 that was just uploaded. This will bring back to the newspaper issue.

19.  To page through the content, you click the arrows that appear when you hover over the image. You can zoom in or out with the mouse wheel. To add more issues and pages, repeat the steps 8-18 above.

Batch Loading Newspaper Pages

Note: Batch loading of page using the Islandora interface, is meant for small batches of 10 or less pages. For more than 10 use Workbench. Instructions for Workbench

1.  Follow steps 1-10 found under Creating a Newspaper above.

2. Click into the newspaper issue that you want to add the pages.

3. Click Children. Then click the Batch Upload Children button.

4.  Select Repository item from the Content Type drop down menu. Select Page from the Model menu. Select File for JP2 and TIFFs or Image for JPGs from the Media Type drop-down menu. Select Original File under Usage. Click the Next button.

Click the Browse button to select the page. Repeat for each Page. Click the Finish button when done.

After the initializing bar finishes you should see the page with names of all the pages you just uploaded. Click the Edit button for each page.

For each page edit, select Text for the Resource Type. Scroll down to Display hints under SYSTEM and choose Open Seadragon for Viewer Override. For Custom Sort Value choose 1 for the first page. Choose 2 for next page edit and so forth. Click the Save button.

Repeat steps 5-6 for each page.  When done click on one of the pages that was just uploaded.

Click on the issue that you added the page into by clicking the breadcrumbs, you should see the pages that you just added if you advance through the pages with the arrows at the top. Congratulations you just batch uploaded pages to a newspaper issue.

Adding PDF Newspaper Pages

1.  You can use PDFs for newspapers. Follow steps 1-8 found in the Creating a Newspaper above to create the Newspaper and add a thumbnail.  Fill the information for the issue. Put in the name of the issue.  Select Digital Document from the Model drop-down menu. Scroll down to the Date Issued and put in the date issued in the YYYY-MM-DD format. Select Collection from the Type drop-down menu. Fill in any other information as you scroll down. Select PDF.js from the Viewer Override drop-down menu. Click the Save button.

2.  Next you add the image to the page that you just created. Click on Media. Click on the Add Media button. Click Document.

3.  You can keep the Name that is pre-filled in. Click the Browse button to select the PDF file.  Select Original File. Click the Save button.

4.  Click on Back to site to get back to the Newspaper issue.

5.  Now the PDF issue appears.
