FL-Islandora Guide: XV. How to Add Compound Objects

A guide for FL-Islandora users.

Introduction

Compound Objects are used when two or more objects are related to each other. The Compound Object Model is metadata only. The parent object is created using the Compound Object Model and then children are added that can have different file formats. For example a front and back of a postcard. A PDF and a corresponding Excel spreadsheet. It can also be a audio file and a corresponding PDF transcript. The below step-by-step instructions will help you create a compound object parents and how to add the corresponding files.

How to Add Compound Objects

1.  Logged in, navigate to the collection where you will add the Compound Object. Click Children.

2.  Click on the Add Child button.

3.  Click on Repository Item.

4.  Type in the name of the Compound object in the Title box. Select Compound Object from the Model drop-down menu. Scroll down to Date Created to add a date if desired. Add any other items. Scroll down to Type and select Collection from the drop-down menu.  Scroll down to the bottom and select OpenSeadragon under the Viewer Override drop-down menu. Click the Save button.

5.  Right click on Children and open it in a new tab.

6.  Click on the tab that you just opened in step 5. Click on Add Child button to add the first compound object.

7.  Click on Repository Item.

8.  Type in the name of the first compound object in the Title box. Select Image from the Model drop-down menu. Scroll down to add the date the object was created if you choose under Date Created.  Scroll down to Type and select Still Image from the drop-down menu. Select OpenSeadragon under Viewer Override drop-down menu. Click System and click the up arrow on the right of the box under Custom Sort Value to choose 1. Click the Save button.

9.  Click Media.  Click the Add Media button.

10.  Click the type of media that you want to add. For this example, Image is being selected.

11.  The name of item is already filled in under Name. Under Image, click the Browse button. For Media Use click in the box next to Original File to select it. Click the Save button.

12.  Click back into the tab that you were in step 4. Click on Children to add the related item.

13.  Click on the Add Child button. This is where you will add another image for your compound object.

14.  Click on Repository Item.

15.  Fill in the Title.  Select Image from under Model in the drop-down menu.  Fill in any desired information as you scroll down.

16.  Scroll down to add the date the object was created if you choose under Date Created.  Scroll down to Type and select Still Image from the drop-down menu. Select OpenSeadragon under Viewer Override drop-down menu. Click System and click the up arrow on the right of the box under Custom Sort Value to choose 2. Click the Save button.

17.  Click on Media.

19.  Click the type of media that you want to add. For this example, Image is being selected.

20.  The name of item is already filled in under Name. Under Image, click the Browse button. For Media Use click in the box next to Original File to select it. Click the Save button.

21.  Click Back to site in the upper left of screen to go to the object that was just uploaded.

22.  Click on the breadcrumbs just above the Title of the object and click on the name of the Compound object.

23.  Congratulations you have created a Compound Object!
